Appoquinimink baseball and Delmar softball both elevated to number 1 in this week’s WDEL/Delaware SportsZone high school rankings.

Baseball and softball continue to be unpredictable this spring, with 9 of the 20 ranked teams suffering at least one loss last week, including Delmar.

There’s a lighter than normal week of action due to Spring Break, but still plenty of chances for shake-ups, including the Flight A battle between Appoquinimink and Middletown baseball.

As usual, rankings are determined with an attempt to emphasize strength of victories as much as possible.

(Updated: April 17, 2017)

BASEBALL

1) Appoquinimink (6-0, 2)

2) Caravel (5-3, 6)

3) St. Mark’s (6-2, 1)

4) Dover (7-1, 3)

5) Conrad (7-0, 4)

6) Middletown (5-1, 7)

7) Delmar (8-1, 8)

8) Newark Charter (5-1, X)

9) Salesianum (5-3, 5)

10) DMA (6-2, 9)

DROPPED OUT: Sussex Tech (7-1, 10)

ON THE RADAR:  Cape Henlopen (5-3-1*), Milford (6-3), Polytech (5-2), Sussex Tech (7-1) Tower Hill (5-1),

* – Cape Henlopen and Smyrna played a 2-2 game stopped by darkness on 4/3

Caravel vaults back up on the strength of Joey Silan’s 1-hitter.  Saint Mark’s lost twice this week, but to the teams we now have at 1 and 2.  It will take multiple aces to win this state title, and most of the top teams have strong 1s and 2s, perhaps the question is who has that 3rd starter for the tournament format (especially if it rains).  Newark Charter enters on the strength of 3 straight 6-5 wins, but they get tested with DMA and Caravel this week.

GAME TO WATCH:  Middletown at Appooquinimink (Thursday, Noon) – Spring Break week makes for plenty of fun matinees, but perhaps no stronger matchup than the Cavs and Jags.  Who will Appo throw at Middletown?

SOFTBALL

1) Delmar (7-1, 2)

2) Lake Forest (5-2, 4)

3) Sussex Tech (7-1, 1)

4) Sussex Central (4-2, 3)

5) Newark Charter (5-1, 6)

6) Red Lion (6-1, 8)

7) Smyrna (7-2, 7)

8) Indian River (4-2, X)

9) Appoquinimink (5-3, 5)

10) Padua (6-2, 10)

DROPPED OUT:  Caravel (3-4, 9),

ON THE RADAR: Caravel (3-4), Charter of Wilmington (6-2), Caesar Rodney (5-3), Delmarva Christian (7-1), Milford (4-2)

How do you lose by 10 runs in a game and move to No. 1?  Beat a team that picked up huge wins over Sussex Tech and Caravel.  Speaking of the Bucs, it’s weird to have them out of the Top 10,  but they’re now 0-3 again the Henlopen Conference, including a 7-6 loss to a 3-5 Polytech team. Have to think we’ll hear from them before the year is out, but for now, they’re on the outside of the 10.  We know this much:  There will not be an undefeated state champion this year.  Five of the Top 10, including 1, 2, & 4 all lost.

GAME TO WATCH:  Lake Forest at Indian River (Thursday, 4:15) – Indian River’s win over Delmar means a victory here could put the Indians in the Henlopen South driver’s seat, but can they contain Lake’s powerful offense?

BOYS LACROSSE

1) Salesianum (5-2, 1)

2) Appoquinimink (5-0, 2)

3) Friends (4-0, 3)

4) Archmere (6-2, 4)

5) Tower Hill (4-2, 5)

DROPPED OUT: None

Only in-state loss by the top 5 this week was Tower Hill’s setback to Friends.  Tower Hill will face undefeated DMA on Friday night in the Seahawks’ first litmus test to see if they are rankings worthy.

GIRLS LACROSSE

1) Cape Henlopen (6-1, 1)

2) Ursuline (6-1, 2)

3) Saint Mark’s (6-1, 4)

4) Tower Hill (4-2, 5)

5) Archmere (5-1, X)

DROPPED OUT: Polytech (5-2, 3)

Polytech’s 14-9 loss to Archmere shakes things up here.  Most teams take the Spring Break so there shouldn’t be much turbulence this week.
