After 12 weeks of battle, six teams remain for the three Delaware state championships to be handed out at Delaware Stadium Saturday.

We won’t make picks in the Special Olympics/DIAA Unified Flag Football Game between Smyrna and Newark Charter, other than to ask that if you’re planning to come to either title game, please consider cheering on the athletes competing in that game. No athletes will appreciate it more, and it’s not even close.

Now onto our two other championship games, which are rematches of regular season games.

In Division 1, Middletown and Smyrna opened the season in the Harvest Bowl, in a game where all 9 touchdowns were from at least 21 yards away in a Middletown victory.

In Division 2, Delmar went into a must-win situation against Milford, and earned a 35-10 victory that sparked their Henlopen South title run, which put them in the field, and two victories later has them in the title game.

Will the results be the same, will one be different, will both change? We posed the question to our Delaware SportsZone Staff.

Don’t forget you can hear all of the action from Championship Saturday beginning with the “Players Only” Pregame show at Noon on WDEL.

SEAN GREENE – Last Week 4-0  – Overall 187-50 (79%)

DON VOLTZ – Last Week – 3-1 – Overall 172-65 (73%)

PHIL ALMQUIST – Last Week – 4-0 – Overall – 179-58 (76%)

KEVIN HAYES – Last Week – 3-1

GARY SCHOFIELD – Last Week – 4-0 (10-0 Postseason)

Saturday, November 2

Division 1 Championship

No. 2 Smyrna (9-2) vs. No. 1 Middletown (11-0) – 1pm (WDEL)

SEAN – Smyrna 34-28. Trying to find the difference from Week 1, and if there’s one position with the biggest room for growth, it’s QB Isaiah Wilson. He struggled in the first meeting, but if he can take pressure off of Knight, that could be all the difference in another shootout.

DON – Smyrna 30-27. Smyrna quarterback Isaiah Wilson was unsure as a passer in the first meeting at the beginning of the season.  Smyrna’s offense is firing on all cylinders right now.  Middletown won’t go quietly as they have the right skill players to match Smyrna.  Should be a great game.

PHIL – Smyrna 32-28. Think it’s going to be close between two solid clubs. One has Will Knight, the other doesn’t.

KEVIN – Middletown 35-30. Smyrna has Will Knight, but a rematch from week one will be won by defense with a potential air show from Drew Fry.

GARY – Smyrna 34-28. Will Knight has made all the history one young man can, so it’s fitting he wins 3 straight state titles to finish his career.

Division 2 Championship

No. 8 Delmar (11-1) vs. No. 4 Milford (9-3) – 5:30pm (WDEL/Delaware 105.9/ESPN930AM/102.1FM)

SEAN – Delmar 22-14. – Delmar’s defense did a nice job against D.J. Bowman in the first meeting, and while I don’t think they’ll duplicate the 35 points from round 1, it should be enough to send the title all the way down Rt. 13.

DON – Delmar 21-13 – Delmar is playing as well as anyone right now.  Great combination of inside-outside running.  Fearless freshman quarterback.  Milford’s defense keeps them in the game but Delmar’s momentum is strong right now.  Also, great veteran coaching.

PHIL – Delmar 35-21. Picked Delmar correctly in Round 1 of this matchup. No reason for me to change here.

KEVIN – Delmar 28-14. The Dennard / Parker duo is proven success and while Milford’s defense  down Wyatt Nelson, David Bowman will need to have an unreal game with air support to top the Wildcats.

GARY – Milford 24-21. This team has been doubted all year, and not many give them a chance in this one, let’s just say I’ve got a feeling.
