Tatnall’s Oliver Campbell drove in two runs, and Matt Danz allowed two runs in a complete game as DE Post 1 defeated Virginia’s state champion 5-2 in their opening game of the 2017 American Legion Mid-Atlantic Regional in Purcellville, Virginia.
The Delaware champions trailed 1-0 after a first inning home run, but put together two runs in the 4th and 5th inning to take the lead for good.
Dave Mongeluzi tied the game with an infield single that scored Campbell, and then as he unsuccessfully tried to steal second base, Michael Serafin raced home with the go-ahead run.
Campbell then stretched the lead to three in the 5th with a 2-run single to right, plating Michael Cautillo and Chris Ludman.
After Virginia picked up a run in the 5th, Brian Gilardi picked up a sacrifice fly to allow Cautillo to score his second run of the game, sealing the victory.
Danz struck out 7 batters as DE Post 1 advanced in the winner’s bracket to face the Maryland champions Thursday evening. The winner of the 10-team tournament advances to the American Legion World Series.
