Delaware Post 1 rallied from a big deficit for a second straight day, but again came up short as they were eliminated in an 11-inning, 9-8 loss to host Leesburg, Virginia in the 2017 American Legion Mid-Atlantic Regional.
Leesburg’s four-run, first inning put Delaware in a hole, but they steadily worked back into the game, and even took two leads in the game.
Chris Ludman’s RBI single in the 4th, Jack Dubecq’s RBI single in the 5th, and an RBI groundout by Brian Gilardi in the 6th brought DE Post 1 within a run.
The offensive exploded for three more runs in the top of the 7th to gain the lead. Michael Serafin tied the game on a wild pitch, before Eric Ludman’s 2-run single to right boosted Delaware to the lead.
Leesburg countered with their own 3-run 7th to again jump ahead 7-6 going to the 8th, where again Delaware jumped into the lead.
Oliver Campbell’s RBI single preceded Dave Mongeluzi’s sac fly that gave Delaware the 8-7 advantage.
Once again Leesburg responded, this time with their own sacrifice fly, to tie the game.
The score remained 8-8 into the bottom of the 11th, when Delaware couldn’t complete a double play, allowing the winning run to score for Leesburg.
Jack Dubecq led the way with a 4-for-5 performance with an RBI and two runs scored.
Delaware was hoping to snap a First State drought in the American Legion World Series that dates back to 1973.
