With a 36-28 victory, the Tigers of A.I. Dupont defeat Howard and advance in the DIAA division two state football tournament.
It wasn’t hard to see that having the week off from a scheduled game with Dickinson gave A.I. an extra edge as they’d need every bit of stamina to outlast the Wildcats.
The Tigers came out and executed early going up by 14 points just four minutes into the game.
Sophmore runningback Thomas Mosely struck both times for touchdown runs of 30 and five yards.
From there Howard stayed in the game as defenses would prevail and an unprecedented seven turnovers in the contest (AI 3 / Howard 4) would keep everyone sitting in the stadium on the edge of their seats.
Howard’s Keith Chung caught a long scoring throw but would be out of action for a little under half of the game with what appeared to be a lower leg injury.
Chung’s return was key as the Wildcats scored 14 in the second half to pull into a tie.
Chad Jones’ big day just kept rolling as he’d find Naz’Aire Miller for the second of their scoring connections. Jones would have three touchdown passes on the night with the other going to LeRoy Lynch. (Who will be making a few appearances on DSZ’s top plays of the week.)
Ultimately it was the Tigers avenging an October 20th loss on the very same field to the very same team. This time around it was win or go home.
Howard finishes the season a combined 8-3 and has no reason to hang thier heads with a well-fought contest coming just short of the semi-finals in their tournament appearance.
A.I. DuPont is rewarded for the victory with another home game next week.
The 8th seeded Delmar Wildcats took out top seeded DMA and will make another long trip up to Wilmington.
Day and time for Tigers versus Wildcats version 2.0 will be announced later this weekend.
