Burlington County’s Julian Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to cap off a 3-run, 8th inning as they rallied for a 4-3 victory over Delaware South in the 2018 Carpenter Cup Quarterfinals.
Hoping to return to Citizens Bank Park for a second straight year, Delaware South turned a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead on a two-run, 4th inning single by Laurel freshman Connor Ellingsworth, and an RBI single from St. Georges’ Aidan Riley in the 5th inning.
That was solid support for Dover’s Dominic Velazquez and Milford’s Chad Reichold on the mound. Velazquez allowed two hits in his three innings of work, while Reichold surrendered just one base hit while throwing four strikeouts in three scoreless innings.
The game remained 3-1 into the 8th, when Burlington’s Latrell Reid drew a leadoff walk, which sparked the go-ahead rally.
Connor Coolahan drove him in with a single two batters later, and then two more batters later Chris Baker tied the game with a single to right-center.
After a pitching change, Julian Lopez drove a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Zac Taylor to cross easily with the go-ahead run.
Delaware South wouldn’t go quietly, as Polytech’s Evan Harris led off the 9th with a triple to center, but Burlington closer Bryce Mangene struck out the next three batters to end the First Staters’ run.
Nate McVey added a triple for Delaware South, who also picked up a pair of singles and the 2 RBIs from Ellingsworth.
