Three weeks ago, Zach Dale was at Frawley Stadium celebrating Cape Henlopen’s first baseball championship, Saturday, he’ll step onto Delaware’s biggest football stage.

The future Delaware State pitcher will play wide receiver and punter for the Gold Team at the 2018 DFRC Blue-Gold All-Star Football Game inside Delaware Stadium.

Dale’s focus is about to turn completely to baseball, but is looking forward to being introduced one more time while wearing football shoulder-pads.

“It’s going to mean a lot, it’s my last time playing football, so I’m going to leave it all out on the field.”

Dale’s hustle and grit made him an outstanding two-sport athlete, and that didn’t come by accident.

The senior said there’s value in not just focusing on one sport.

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. I don’t pick up a baseball bat when it’s football season and I can hit the baseball, flat out. It’s all about how hard you work when it’s in your season.

“I’ve always said it to my teammates, you could put a baseball bat down for two weeks, and pick it up and feel better than you have in a couple of months.”

Perhaps Zach’s biggest challenge this week is making such a quick transition from baseball to football, as he had put some weight off to be quicker for baseball.

“It’s really tough. The season just ended, so I didn’t have any time to get back in the gym. I’m pretty small because of baseball, but it should be all right.”

Things have certainly been more than all right for Dale this year, who played a key role in the baseball team’s championship, and said their title came thanks to a strong team bond.

“We didn’t only have the talent, but we really got after it every day. We wanted it so bad, we loved each other, had each other’s backs, and fought hard every day.”

Dale is about to fight hard for the Delaware State Hornets next fall, but first it will be the downstate-based Gold Team at Saturday’s DFRC Blue-Gold All-Star Football Game.

Pre-game festivities begin at 5pm, and tickets will be available at the gate.
