Four Delaware North pitchers combined on a two-hitter as the First State squad defeated Berks County 3-2 in a first round game at the 2017 Carpenter Cup Baseball Tournament in South Philadelphia.
Delaware North found themselves down 2-0 before they picked up the bats as a pair of walks and errors allowed Conner Cleaver and Brendan Rivoli to score for the Pennsylvania squad in the opening half inning.
Archmere’s Michael Dellose and Hodgson’s Shawn Haut got those runs back in the 2nd inning, as both smacked RBI doubles to level the game at two.
After the early offense for both teams, a pitching duel then broke out, as the teams combined for just three hits in the final seven innings of the game.
Salesianum’s Ryan Campbell set the tone for Delaware North, striking out a pair of batters in two hitless innings, before handing the baseball to Saint Mark’s hurler Chris Ludman.
The senior was a late add, but proved to be a productive one, as he threw 6 strikeouts in his maximum 3-inning outing. He struck out all three batters he faced in the 6th.
That momentum carried over into the half of the frame, as Wilmington Christian’s Tim Glavin picked up a 1-out walk, stole second, reached third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a balk to give Delaware North their first lead of the afternoon.
Ludman worked through the 8th inning, before handing the baseball to Hodgson’s William Hart for the final frame.
Hart, usually a starter for the Silver Eagles, settled into the game nicely striking out his first two batters before a groundout sealed the victory for Delaware North.
Colin Adams and Michael Dellose each had a double and a walk for Delaware North, who drew 8 free passes while also being hit by a pitch.
Delaware North Pitching combined for 13 strikeouts, with starter Joey Silan getting 3, Ryan Campbell collecting 2, Chris Ludman getting 6, and Hart’s 2 in the 9th inning.
