In a back and forth match Delcastle looked to upset hosting Mount Pleasant, but after four overtime periods found themselves short of the Green Knights 67-63.
Fah’Mir Ali posted 11 points in regulation including the buzzerbeater to send the game into the initial overtime. Ali then put up another 10 in the ensuing four overtimes to total 21 and lead Mount to the W.
While Douglas Sneh put up 18, most of those shots came at key points in the victory.
Delcastle looked defeated at times but spurts from sophmore Femi Olowere beyond the arc put the Cougars in position to tie in regulation and force the multiple overtimes.
Cougar senior Justin Gray-Smith put up 10 in the extra periods to keep Delcastle in contention on top of eight in regulation to total 18 but it was not enough.
The first three overtimes played more like either team trying to prevent the other from winning as opposed to going on the attack with tied scores of 48, 53, 55 and 57.
The final four-minute period saw Ali, Sneh and company go to the rim and foul line more and helped them secure the long victory.
Mount gets a few days off to recover from what was essentially three halves of basketball with a home bout against Concord on Tuesday night.
Delcastle can keep their heads high with the effort but has a short turnaround in home games on Sunday in New Jersey against Penns Grove and an incoming juggernaut in Cape Henlopen on Tuesday night.
