DMA’s Hunter Balback scored a pin in the final bout of the night to secure an important 45-34 victory for the Seahawks over Lake Forest in Division 2 wrestling Wednesday evening.
Last year’s battle came down to the heavyweight contest, as Lake’s Jordan Springer was able to earn a 1-0 victory over Balback to seal the 39-36 win that likely kept the Seahawks out of the state tournament.
Balback didn’t let that memory haunt him this year, as he scored an early taketown, and ultimately recorded a first-period pin that halted Lake’s last-ditch effort to rally.
DMA scored three straight pins from Justin Morgan (160), Cody Nicholson (170), and Mitchell Riley (182) to vault ahead 37-22, putting the Seahawks on the edge of locking the Spartans out of the match.
The only winning formula left for Lake was to score pins in the final three bouts, and they were up to the challenge.
Brothers Blake (195) and Kristopher (220) Thompson both chalked up pins, making the match 39-34, giving their heavyweight a chance to pin away the bout from DMA, but Balback didn’t allow that to happen.
The teams split two pins each at the lower weights, with DMA’s Hunter Smith (120) and Zach Martinez (132) earning dukes for DMA, while Lake’s Coleman Mosely (138) and Jackson Sylvester (145) responded in kind to give them a 22-18 lead.
The swing bout came at 152, as DMA’s Zachery Love was able to throw his opponent for a takedown in the second period on his way to a 6-4 decision, that brought the deficit down to 22-21, but swinging those points DMA’s way forced Lake to look for pins late, and it didn’t add up for the Spartans.
DMA (4-0) is slated to compete at the Delcastle Invitational this weekend. They’ll look to build on a 1-0 DSAC record by hosting Conrad next Wednesday.
Lake Forest (0-3) will host the Spartan Duals this weekend (weather permitting), before travelling to Indian River next Wednesday.
