Sussex Central freshman Izebella Grebe’s first career grand slam highlighted one of two 6-run innings as the Golden Knights defeated DMA 19-6 Wednesday afternoon.
DMA held a 2-1 lead after two innings following Kayla Frazer’s RBI ground-rule double and Nicole Elliot’s run-scoring single, but things would suddenly turn against the Seahawks.
Central’s Taylor Evick tied the game with a single in the 3rd, but the next two innings would both provide a half-dozen runs for the visitors.
The 4th inning onslaught began with Morgan Burton’s walk, and she scored in Haley Grey’s RBI single to center. Pitcher Hayley McCabe added a bases-loaded walk, setting the table for Grebe.
Grebe took a high pitch to the opposite field, easily clearing the right-field wall for her first career 4-run homer, stretching the lead out to 8-2.
Following another quick inning by McCabe on the mound, the Golden Knight offense quickly went back to work in the 5th inning.
The first six batters of the frame all reached base, and ultimately scored, with RBIs from Kailee Abbott, Grey, Mariah Rogers, and a two-run double by McCabe stretching the lead to 14-2.
Facing the 10-run rule, DMA fought back with a 4-run bottom half of the 5th inning to keep the game alive, finishing with a 2-run single off the bat of Lana Brown.
Sussex Central added 5 more runs in the 7th inning to finish off the victory.
The Golden Knights improved to 5-2 with their 5th straight victory. They’ll look to improve to 2-1 in Henlopen North play when they host Caesar Rodney Friday at 3:15pm.
DMA (2-3) will look to shake off the loss as they host Caravel Thursday at 3:45.
