DIAA tournaments were in full swing this week and the quality of highlights showed.

Two teams in different sports overcame in rematches to either win hardware or advance.

Winning doesn’t guarantee you make top plays. (But it definitely helps)

Honorable Mentions) First go to Hailey Bitters of Delmar field hockey who helped win earlier in the week prior to championship Saturday with a nice slapshot goal.

Second goes to Darius Hale of the Hodgson Vocational Tech football team. This running back is power incarnate. Hale went for a 35-yard scamper breaking tackles left and right.

10) Padua – Emily Jarome’s senior season and she went out with a bang. Padua may have placed second in the DIAA tournament but they were a force to be reckoned with from day one.

9) William Penn – Isaiah Gaynor goes 57 yards after emerging from the backfield. The Colonials upset Sussex Tech and will need to do it again against top seeded Middletown.

8) A.I. DuPont – LeRoy Lynch had a stellar performance in the rematch against Howard. The Tiger’s only loss of the season was to Howard in their own stadium. Revenge exacted.

7) Caesar Rodney – In a losing effort the CR defense managed to take the ball away from Hodgson on four separate occasions. This is a program that has truly turned itself around and they should be back in next year’s tournament.

6) Delmar – Jordan Moore goes top shelf against Tower hill as the Wildcats claim the division two field hockey championship.

5) Howard – Amon John made a ridiculous grab before getting hit and hit hard. 360 degrees later and he still had the ball and a Howard first down.

4) Cape Henlopen – Cameron Smith gets the only goal of the game as Cape claims the division one field hockey championship.

3) Salesianum – A beautiful header goal with the feed from John Leonard. This Bryce Wallace goal assured that Salesianum wins the division one soccer tournament for the eigth year in a row.

Runner Up) A.I. DuPont – Did we mention that LeRoy Lynch killed it against Howard on Saturday? Lynch made a toe drag catch late in the game which may not have been held up in the NFL stage but would have been gold per NCAA standards. A.I. will hosts a Delmar Wildcat football team on a roll friday night at home.

DSZ Top Play of the Week) Ursuline – Taylor Wright’s match winning kill gave the Raiders the DIAA volleyball title. This win comes after Padua had not only taken UA from the top rank but had beaten them in both prior meetings this season. Overcoming an obstacle like that and with such a great kill, Ursuline is rewarded with the top play.
