Howard two-sport star Shawn Bowman is this week’s Star Health / Delaware SportsZone Athlete of the Week.
The senior was named a All-State First Team defensive lineman last Monday, and followed it up with a 14-point performances in basketball against Vo-Tech rivals Delcastle and Hodgson.
Bowman steadily improved his play, to the point he’s being scouted by teams from all levels of college football, from FBS UConn to Division III Wesley. Bowman credits taking advantage of his 6’5″, 230-pound frame.
“I just realized I’m at a great advantage compared to other people I play. It’s really just going out there and saying I’m going to dominate every play.”
While Shawn has yet to commit to a school going into next week’s early signing period, he does have a major in mind: Chemistry. Bowman said his interested was sparked by an in-class experiment last year.
“It was something with potassium. I know we set up these papers, and then a week later we were blowing them up in class, and that was really cool to see.”
Balancing college football with any major can be a challenge, especially when you can be working 30-40 hours a week on your craft. That can also be the same story for students in science majors, but Bowman said he’s ready for the challenge.
“I let coaches know that whatever I’m doing, I’m going to give it all I got. I know it’s going to be a tough major as well, but I’m willing to commit to football and chemistry.”
And Howard football and basketball has benefited from the hard work of Shawn Bowman, this week’s Star Health / Delaware SportsZone Athlete of the Week.
