Howard’s Keith Chung caught and run for a first-half touchdown as the Wildcats handed A.I. duPont their first loss with a 36-20 victory Friday night.
In front of a spirited Homecoming crowd, The Wildcats struck first when Chung scored on a 4-yard burst and two-point conversion for a 8-0 lead.
A.I. duPont responded on the next drive, with Chad Jones finding Jamir Dantley over the middle for an 11-yard catch-and-run into the end zone.
Chung wasn’t done with his first-half damage, as he took a long pass from Tyhir Harley over the middle, and while sprinting to his team’s sideline, he throw a stiff-arm that gained him five yards of clearance for a 81-yard touchdown, that put his team up 16-7 at intermission.
The lead extended in the latter stages of the 3rd quarter, as Stephen Forbi’s long run set up a one-yard plunge by Lance Williams to get the lead to 22-7.
Shawn Bowman then blocked a punt, and Jeremyah Combs-Washington sprinted 30 yards for another touchdown, making it a 28-7 game.
Jones and Dantley connected again for A.I. in a comeback bid, as Dantley soared over two defenders to reel in a 17-yard pass from Jones, but that was as close as they’d get.
Hissan Snell added a 3-yard touchdown, and A.I.’s Brandon Addison returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown, but it wasn’t enough time for the hosts to make a comeback and save their perfect season.
Howard (5-2) successfully shook off their loss to Saint Mark’s last week, and they’ll look to continue their strong play at home against Mount Pleasant next Saturday at 4pm inside Baynard Stadium.
A.I. (6-1) saw their 7-game winning streak dating back to 2016 come to an end. They’ll now need Howard to slip to Glasgow to have a chance at a 3-way split in Flight B. They’ll play at district-rival McKean next Friday at 7.
