Concord field hockey’s Molly Meinecke connected on her team’s 9th penalty corner to edge Archmere 1-0 in the season opener for both teams.
The battle of 2016 DIAA Tournament participants was an even dual throughout, with neither team breaking through in an opening half that featured just one shot on goal.
Archmere eventually ramped up the pressure, earning three consecutive penalty corners at one point, but Concord’s defense was up to the task, keeping the Auks off the board.
The field eventually switched, and the Raiders took advantage.
Izzy Schieb inbounded the corner to the offensive left side of the goal to Katie Raab at the top of the circle. She found Sarah Raab, who then fed Brooke Kapinski near the right baseline.
Kapinski then side a pass outside of the goalie’s reach onto the blade of Meinecke, who outdueled an Archmere defender to pound home the goal with 16:59 to go in the game.
Archmere would get some late posession, but were unable to crack the Raider defense for a shot on goal in the final minutes.
The shutout was a great start for the Raiders, who collected 8 clean sheets on their way to an 9-4-3 record last season. They’ll play at Sanford on Wednesday afternoon.
Archmere looks to regroup as they play their DSAC opener against DMA at the Kirkwood Soccer Club on Thursday.
