Smyrna’s Jessica Anderson pitched a 4-hitter, and Olyvia Smith hit an RBI triple and scored on an error for a 2-1 win over DMA on the final day of the softball regular season.
Both teams spent time at the top of the WDEL/Delaware SportsZone Top 10 this year, but after Smyrna was moved to the top spot earlier in the day, they had to play from behind.
DMA’s Brooke Conaty broke the shutout with a towering drive over the center-field wall in the 2nd inning.
The bottom of Smyrna’s line-up flipped the script an inning later, as Abby Mace drew a lead-off walk, and with the outfield playing in, 9-hitter Smith turned on a pitch and drove it all the way to the right-field wall.
Mace easily hurried home on the RBI triple, but a failed relay towards the plate allowed Smith to follow her, giving the Eagles the 2-1 lead.
That would be enough support for Anderson, who did have to work around a walk and single in the 4th inning, but she did have one more test in the 7th.
Olivia Farris drew a two-out walk, and moved to second on a wild pitch, but Anderson forced a ground-out to end the game.
Anderson struck out six batters and allowed two walks in her 4-hit, 1-run performance.
Smyrna wrapped up its regular season at 17-1, and will wait for Wednesday’s bracket announcement before learning who they will face in the opening round on Saturday.
DMA’s Lani Sheehan surrendered just three hits and one earned run, but it wasn’t enough to stop DMA from dropping to 15-3 on the season.
