New year, new No. 1 in Girls Basketball after Sanford’s impressive victory over St. Anthony (CA) at the Diamond State Classic.

Combined with short-handed Ursuline’s offensive struggles, Sanford at the moment looks like the more complete team, so they jumped to No. 1. That said, it still looks like you can put a blanket over the top four, who begin actually playing each other this week.

Caravel boys basketball drops a bit after losing to Cape Henlopen in the final game of the Slam Dunk to the Beach.

The other sports begin to get more intense, including the fact we’re now just over a month away from the indoor track championships. Hard to believe hardware will be handed out in just 5 weeks!

(Updated: January 2, 2018)

BOYS BASKETBALL
1) Smyrna (7-1, Last Week: 1)
2) Cape Henlopen (5-2, 3)
3) Sanford (1-3, 4)
4) Salesianum (4-2, 5)
5) Caravel (2-3, 2)
6) Caesar Rodney (5-0, 6)
7) William Penn (4-1, 7)
8) St. Georges (6-3, 8)
9) Mount Pleasant (4-2, 9)
10) Saint Elizabeth (5-1, X)

Dropped Out: Glasgow (7-2, 10)

Caravel’s loss to Cape Henlopen at the Slam Dunk to the Beach shifts the rankings. Sanford stays at No. 3 despite the 1-3 record due to the fact they have just the one noteworthy in-state result (loss to Cape)… Saint Elizabeth jumps in, but face a challenging week with two ranked opponents on the road.

GAME TO WATCH: Smyrna at Caesar Rodney (Tuesday, 6:15) – CR joins Friends as the only two unbeaten teams left as we enter 2018. CR is off to a solid 3-0 start in the Henlopen North, but this will be their biggest test yet. Smyrna has excelled despite a tough opening 8-game run, and along with Cape Henlopen, this figures to be the second game of an interesting double round-robin between these squads.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
1) Sanford (3-2, 3)
2) Ursuline (4-3, 1)
3) Caravel (3-3, 2)
4) Conrad (6-2, 4)
5) St. Elizabeth (6-0, 5)
6) Caesar Rodney (3-4, 6)
7) Hodgson (5-2, 8)
8) Howard (5-2, 10)
9) Sussex Tech (5-0, 7)
10) St. Thomas More (5-1, X)

Dropped out: Sussex Central (4-3, 9)

A couple of noteworthy results, as Sanford earned a 3rd place result in the Main Draw of the Diamond State Classic, while Ursuline finished 6th. Both teams are missing key peices. At the same event, Howard upset Caesar Rodney, setting up a triangle where Hodgson beat Howard who beat CR who beat Hodgson… St. Thomas More knocked off Sussex Central, earning them a slot in the rankings, as well.

GAME TO WATCH: St. Elizabeth at Ursuline (Thursday, 7:15) – The first meeting of the year for the traditional Final Four particpants. Saint Elizabeth is coming off a bracket championship (admittedly an easier pod than Ursuline). This figures to be St. E’s toughest in-state test to date, while Ursuline looks to get its offense in gear without Olivia Mason and Kay Wulah.

5) Dover (3-2, 5)
We left everything the same entering 2018, as Henlopen North action gets back in play this week.

DUEL TO WATCH: Sussex Central at Dover (Wednesday, 6:30) – Dover tested a short-handed Smyrna squad earlier this season, so we’ll see where the Senators truly sit in the hierarchy after this battle.

1) Milford (1-1, 1)
2) Indian River (1-0, 2)
3) Laurel (1-1, 3)
4) Sanford (0-0, 4)

DROPPED OUT: None
