DMA softball’s big week of victories over Lake Forest and then-No. 1 Milford jumped them to No. 1 in softball in this week’s WDEL/Delaware SportsZone High School Rankings.

There weren’t a ton of games over spring break, but baseball and softball saw some shifting thanks to some top-5 matchups.

BASEBALL

1) Cape Henlopen  (5-0, Last Week: 1)

2) Caravel (3-0, 3)

3) Saint Mark’s (5-0, 4)

4) Middletown (3-1, 2)

5) Salesianum (2-0, 5)

6) Appoquinimink (3-1, 6)

7) Sussex Central (4-0, 10)

8) Hodgson (5-0, X)

9) Red Lion (3-0, 9)

10) Dover (3-1, 8)

DROPPED OUT: Indian River (3-2, 7)

*- Smyrna and Sussex Tech had a game suspended 2-2 after 7 innings on 3/29

Cape Henlopen’s victory over Middletown helped to begin to sort out the top of the rankings, while there are probably a dozen teams who could fit in the 5-16 range. Saint Elizabeth is 2-3, but lost by a total of 4 runs to St. Mark’s, Concord, and Hodgson… Indian River dropped out after tough losses to St. Mark’s and Smyrna, giving 5-0 Hodgson room to sneak into the rankings…. St. Georges (4-0) is the one unranked team not in the top 10, while Caesar Rodney (5-1) could also easily work their way in with a quality victory.

GAME TO WATCH: Caravel at St. Mark’s (Tuesday, 4pm) – Another chance for some separation at the top of the rankings, this could easily be a preview of a game at Frawley Stadium in Late May (or Early June). St. Mark’s has replaced some quality pitching from last year, while Caravel begins another tough week that ends with a Saturday night showdown with Indian River.

SOFTBALL

1) DMA (4-0, 5)

2) Smyrna (4-1, 2)

3) Lake Forest (2-1, 3)

4) Indian River (6-1, 7)

5) Wilmington Charter (3-0, X)

6) Caravel (3-0, 6)

7) Sussex Central (2-1, X)

8) Milford (2-2, 1)

9) Sussex Tech (5-1, 8)

10) Newark Charter (4-0, 9)

DROPPED OUT: Appoquinimink (2-0, 10), Delmar (2-2, 4)

DMA skyrockets to No. 1 after victories over Milford and Lake Forest last week… Indian River’s 1-1 day against Charter and Smyrna certainly makes the rankings tricky, as it’s hard to find room to put Smyrna into the rankings, so Appo drops out just because they don’t have a quality win yet (but they’ve won both of their games easily, this could be a brief demotion)… Delmar also slipped out in favor of Sussex Central, who holds a victory over them… For the third straight week we’ll say this: Softball will probably have the most week-to-week change of any sport this spring.

GAME TO WATCH: Delmar at Newark Charter (Monday, 3:45) – A quick chance to see if it was an overreaction to drop Delmar, and whether Newark Charter’s hot start is truly meaningful… Also, Indian River’s tough schedule continues with a game at Caravel Thursday night.

GIRLS SOCCER

Division 1

1) Padua (3-0, 1)

2) Appoquinimink (1-1, 2)

3) Middletown (2-0, 3)

3) Sussex Academy (2-0, 3)

4) DMA (2-0-1, 4)

5) Delmar (3-0, 5)

DROPPED OUT: None

There’s not a whole lot to say here, most teams took Spring Break off, although Padua proved they apparently also want to win the Alabama state championship after two victories down there.

MATCH TO WATCH: Caesar Rodney vs. Padua (Tuesday, 6:00 – DE Turf) – First ranked matchup in Division I this season, Padua appears to be ready to get back to the top of the mountain, and here’s their first chance for a major Division I win.

8) DMA (1-2, 9)

10) Milford (3-0, X)

Dropped Out: Tower Hill (0-3, 7)

Tower Hill drops out after losing by a total of 13 goals to Tatnall and Saint Andrew’s…  Milford sneaks in, although Saint Andrew’s can make an argument with a win over Tatnall this week… Otherwise, things hold pretty status quo at the top of the rankings ahead of a full week of action.

GAME TO WATCH: Cape Henlopen vs. Salesianum (Saturday, 3pm – Wesley College) – The highlight of the Dave Reynolds Festival, this match-up has brought 2 memorable championship game upsets in recent years, and is a rare Salesianum in-state game.

DROPPED OUT: None

Another sport with no major changes due to a lack of games, the games will pick up over the next 7 weeks.

GAME TO WATCH: Padua at Polytech (Friday, 5:00) – Padua’s strength-of-schedule has been lacking as they’ve been growing their program, and this might be their biggest in-season test.
