Smyrna defeated Middletown 30-27 for the Division I Championship on Saturday at the University of Delaware.

Middletown would win the coin toss and elect to receive. On the kickoff, Middletown would fumble as the Eagles would recover and start their possession at the Cavaliers 49.

Smyrna would cash in the turnover for points as Will Knight scored his first touchdown of the game, a 2 yard run with 9:08 to go in the first. Will Knight would also convert the two-point conversion as the Eagles took an 8-0 lead.

Late in the first half, Middletown would get on the board with a 6 yard pass from Drew Fry to Nicholas Johnston. The extra point was good as Smyrna would lead 8-7 at the break.

To start the second half, Middletown would recover a fumble on the kickoff and they would start their possession on Smyrna’s 42.

They would convert the turnover to points as Drew Fry would hit Esaias Guthrie for a 35 yard score. The extra point was no good as Middletown would lead 13-8.

Later in the third quarter, Smyrna’s Isaiah Wilson would fake a handoff to Will Knight, but instead keep it. He would be stripped by Middletown. Johnathan Smith would recover the ball and go 38 yards for the score giving the Cavaliers a 20-8 lead.

Two plays into the next drive for Smyrna, they would get back into it as Will Knight would pass to Stephen Whaley for a 41 yard score as the Eagles climbed to within 6.

With 7:35 to go in the game, Smyrna would tie things up as Will Knight would score again, this time from the 9. He would also convert the two point play, giving Smyrna a 22-20 lead.

Middletown would start their next drive on their own 11 and drive all the way to Smyrna’s 31 before giving the ball back on downs.

On the next play, Will Knight would find daylight and go 69 yards for the score. The two point conversion was good, also by Will Knight, as they took a 30-20 lead with 2:38 to go in the game.

Middletown would close the gap with 1:12 left as Drew Fry hit Kenneth Edelin for a 18 yard passing score.

The extra point was good as the Cavaliers would close to within three.

Smyrna would recover the attempted onsides kick and Will Knight would close out the game with a kneel down.
