Charter School of Wilmington’s Mallory McCormick drove in four runs, and starter Haley Lattomus recorded nine strikeouts as the Force rolled past Concord softball 9-1 Thursday afternoon.
Concord entered on an 8-game win streak, but the Force stifled that momentum quickly, as their first three batters of the game each reached base and scored in the opening inning.
Taylor Gillis was hit by the first pitch of the game, and Ashley Steiner and Brooke Dooley followed with singles, the second of which scored Gillis to put the Force in front.
McCormick and Ciera Tweed each followed with RBI groundouts, as Wilmington Charter set the tone for the day.
They put four more runs on the board in the second, taking advantage of three errors, getting RBIs from Marlayna Capaldi and Ashley Steiner before McCormick lofted an opposite-field triple to right field for a pair of runs.
Leading 7-0 after two innings gave starter Haley Lattomus plenty of confidence, as she struck out the side in the second inning, and didn’t let a runner into scoring position until the fourth inning, when Skye Lupi put Concord on the board with an RBI single to center.
Antonia Browning took over in the 6th, and she allowed just 1 of her 7 opposing batters to reach base, another Lupi single, but Concord could not get a rally going.
Steiner added some more insurance with a crushing triple over the outfielders’ heads in the 7th inning for an RBI triple, which was followed by McCormick’s fielder’s choice that gave her a 4th RBI on the game.
Wilmington Charter (11-5) wraps up their season with two tough games, as they’ll host Caravel at 10:30am on Saturday and play Padua at Midway Softball Complex on Tuesday at 3:45.
Concord (10-6) looks to start a new winning streak as they’ll face Flight B leader Mount Pleasant at home Saturday at 11am before hosting St. Georges, the team that defeated No. 1 Appo this week, on Tuesday at 3:45.
